Consideration of Sales Tax Measure SUBMISSION FROM: Grigger Jones From: Robert M Jones <grigger@robertmjones.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2020 11:05 AM To: City Clerk <cityclerk@atascadero.org> Cc: Ron DeCarli <rondecarli@gmail.com>; 'Ron Overacker' <ronoveracker@gmail.com>; Emily Reneau <emily@atascaderochamber.org>; Rachelle Rickard <rrickard@atascadero.org>; Tom O'Malley Forward Address <tomomalley@charter.net> Subject: May 26, 2020 Council Agenda Item C 2. Mayor and Council Members: Re: Agenda Item C 2. I am a member of an ad hoc group concerned about the financial future of our City. As we all are aware, Atascadero has the lowest revenue per capita of all Cities in this County. As your recent contracted polls indicate, a majority of our citizens would support a 1% sales tax to support our police, fire and emergency responders as well as our infrastructure needs. With our current economic calamity with business shut-downs or drastic slow-downs, we are in great need of an additionally revenue source. We believe that our citizens would greatly appreciate a unanimous Council’s decision to place a ballot measure before the voters in November for a new 1 % sales tax. Such a unanimous decision took place in 2014 with measure F-14 for a ½ % sales tax, which has been highly successful in having our streets, roads and related infrastructure repaired and improved. Our Business Community was greatly supportive of F-14 and I believe such a commitment by our Business Community will be there for a 1% tax measure to be place on the ballot for November. I greatly urge you to consider such a sales tax measure to be placed on our November ballot, and I would hope that such a decision would be unanimous. I believe it would bring a much needed encouragement to our Citizens to know that our City Council is looking out for their best interests.
