Visit SLO CAL Tourism Marketing District Renewal
Key Questions
the Bast 13- j years Visit Sl_O CAL has created a track record of success in delivering not only for the
:.,sing investors, but for the communities across the county. Through establishing a unifying countywide
11d, innovativ(, research, strategic marketing, advanced sales and PR efforts, the expansion of air servic.c.
rtnerships with Visit California, AMG EN Tour of California and others, Visit SLC CAL has defivered on its
+e;rative to '`Demonstrate value to our stakeholders, partners and communities". Based on these results and
confidence of the lodging investors across the county, Visit SLC CAL is seeking a renewal of the Tourism
:riceting District (TMD).
A':. y would Visit SLO CAL seek to increase the assessme.pf from 1 °/0 °o?
Me coming years, the lodging industry has identifies! a Mlrnherlof priority growth and stabilization areas
_1iriftg strategic, investment. Irl order to achieve these rc'sults additional funds will be required. Industry
+itified priorities include:
Additional advertising in key drive markets (Los Angeles and San Francisco) and long-haul markets
(Phocnix, Seattle, Denver & Las Vegas) driving longer length -of -stay and increased spend. These
efforts will continue to grow awareness, demand and market share for the destination while offsetting a
forecasted 20% increase in SLC) CAL lodging inventory over the next 4 years, 11 % over the next 24
months -
Advancement of key sales initiatives and support to offset a forecasted 20% increase in SLC] CAE.
lodging inventory over the next 4 years through additional safes efforts assuring there are travelers to
fill this new inventory of roams
Growth of international markets through long-term, strategic trade and PR efforts in key
international destinations (top 5 international markets and key emerging markets) delivering longer mid-
week and shoulder period stays
a Continued support and expansion of air service development through additional flights and the
addition of new feeder markets (markets tinder development include San Diego, Portland, Dallas, Las
Vegas and others)
Visit SLO CAL -owned tourism -related recommendations coming out of the Destination
Management Strategy (examples may include assisting in product development, a countywide
customer service training program, etc.) Tourism -related recommendations coming out of the DMS
would need to be developed, paid for and facilitated and Visit SLO CAL believes it can play a
"leadership role" in this space.
ognizing tho increase in SLO CAL lodging supply, competition for travelers, continued "California in crisis"
looming economic downturn, there is a growing sense of urgency to make these timely investments in
rased marketing, sales and air service development. Not doing so, puts all the above new programs and
+iy current programs, including advertising in current air service markets, travel trade development and
;..-arch all at risk. t ? A Af,sr:f, '-,j r, ?:,,s I__'Eiip-- +. A 1;3401

WiY would Visit 5LO CAL. pursue a 10 -year renewal instead of the current 5 years?
first 3.5 years of the Tourism Marketing District have gone by quickly, In order to provide a longer
, itegic runway V sit SLO CAL is seeking a 10 -year renewal. Reasons include:
Reduced opportunity cost — the process for renewal will take up to one year to work through 7
municipalities and the county government, taking staff time away from other key strategic initiatives-
Umiting this to once every 10 years will allow the organization to be more efficient anti effective.
* Reduced financial cost-- the legal cost to renew the district is $65.400• Limiting this to once every 10
years will reduce the fiscal impact on the organization and increase its efficiency.
• Ability to opt out — each year during the 30 -day anniversary period surrounding the renewal, lodging
ownors € ,'ive the opportunity to eliminate the Tourism Marketing District in the event it is not achieving
rr-;sults.
Approval process , aNiough the lodging community sirens the petitions For the renewal, the uitirnato
approval is with the County Board of Supervisors. Right now, Visit SLO CAL holds a favorable position
with the, Board based on a resutts-driven approach. However, changing political leadership and
priorities could create future uncertainty for the industry and the Tourism Marketing District assessn-ie;It.
The opportunity to secure the Future for the next 10 years is now.
