To: Mayors and City Council Members
County Boards of Supervisors
1986 marks the fifth consecutive year for a nationwide Drunk and Drugged
Driving Awareness Week in mid-December. The past four years have seen
numerous accomplishments in fighting this serious social problem, and there
is every reason to believe that this year's Awareness Week will be even more
effective.
We applaud the diversity of year-round activities conducted by local communities
to reduce the needless deaths and injuries caused by alcohol-related traffic
crashes and hope that you are already aware of, and preparing for, this year's
holiday awareness campaign which is scheduled for December 14-20. Governor
Deukmejian will be issuing a proclamation declaring California Drunk and
Drugged Driving Awareness Week and we hope each local jurisdiction will support
the activity by issuing a proclamation as well .
With each consecutive year, it becomes more difficult to present "new" facts,
11newilprograms. and "new" ideas. Yet a fresh approach is absolutely necessary
to maintin public interest and to sustain current efforts. Our office has a
limited supply of materials that may be of help in conducting an innovative
awareness campaign. Please contact Marilyn Sabin or Barbara Bania of my staff
at (916) 445-9734 if you desire additional information.
For your convenience, we have enclosed a sample proclamation for consideration.
We hope you will support this important campaign by bringing it to the public's
attention. We firmly believe that increased public knowledge about the problems
and some of its simple solutions will help reduce the number of intoxicated
drivers on our roadways and the resultant traffic collisions .
Sincerely,
PETER K. O'ROURKE, Director
