Dear Ms. Gurke:
I received your letter of November 1, 1991, and reviewed it
with the City Manager. His feelings are similar .to my own: that
is, Council only authorized $13, 000 for the Desk and as such,
staff cannot pay any additional amount over that. I have
enclosed a copy of the Council Order to that effect.
It is my understanding that often times in a case such as
this, that the total cost is agreed upon and the sales tax
portion is discounted from that total. In this instance, the
actual purchase price would be $12,264. 15, with a sales tax (at
the then prevailing rate of 6 percent) of $735.85, for a total of
$13, 000.
I hope this clarifies staff' s position on this matter. By
copy, I am also appraising Council of your request. I will keep
you informed if Council wishes to take any further action on this
matter.

SUBJECT: PURCHASE OF E.G. LEWIS' DESK
MOTION: By Councilwoman Borgeson and seconded by Councilman
Shiers to authorize the purchase, subject to a
coati_-ming appraisal, of E.G. Lewis' desk under the
terms outlined as follows: (1) payment of one-
third down ($4,333.33) , (2) authorize six payments,
over six months, of $1,444.45 per month and ( 3)
authorize staff to work with a community
fundzaising effort to pay one-half ($722. 12) of
each month' s payment. If this amount is not
raised, thea the matter is to be brought back to
the City Council; motion unanimously carried 5: 0 by
roll call vote.
CERTIFICATION
Z, Lee •Dayka, City Clerk of the City of Atascadero,
California, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and
exact motion made and passed by the Atascadero City Council: at
their regular meeting of May 14, 1991..

RE: E.G. Lewis Desk
Dear Norm,
This letter is intended to memorialize our agreement regarding
the E.G. Lewis Desk. The desk is to be placed for exhibition in
the Museum and will be on loan from the City.
The Historical Society may display the desk for public viewing
along with the other objects of historical significance. The desk
will be kept safe and free from harm, with the understanding that
the Historical Society will assume any and all liability during the
term of public display in the Museum.
The City, with reasonable notice, may have the desk removed to
another location at City expense.
The Historical Society shall accept and transmit any donations
received, for the purchase of the desk, to the City.
