However, I would like to comment regarding public safety at the Traffic Way and Palma crosswalk (next to The ARTery). Since the City staff painted the curb red next to The ARTery (about 3 years ago), vehicles speeds in the crosswalk have become unsafe. The vehicles that previoudly parked on Palma were an important traffic calming feature. I strongly encourage The Downtown Paving Project to widen Palma and restore parking on Palma. Restoration of parking will also benefit all the nearby businesses. Objective Design Standards Project Update Atascadero City Council, My name is Julien and I grew up in the unincorporated area in the eastern part of North County. As a kid I spent hundreds of hours at the lake park, the zoo, and at your coffee shops, but at that time it felt like that was most of what there was to do. I moved away from SLO in 2013 and moved back in with my parents last year after being priced out of a larger city and was blown away by the changes in Atascadero. My friends and I used to mostly meet in Paso or SLO when we would return to the county we all grew up in for holidays. Over time that's shifted. The new downtown area feels like a huge leap forward and it totally shifted our perception of Atascadero. Instead of a line of businesses built along the highway, it feels like there's a cohesive core to the city, it's great! But it also feels like a first step. We like what we see in Atascadero, but there are very few truly affordable options in north county. Right now Atascadero is a great place to visit but we all agree that it would be a hard place to move to with prices the way they are. The best way to bring prices down is to make sure there's enough places to live, and the current way Atascadero is zoned makes that nearly impossible. Despite the new Downtown area being great it is small and we'd like to see it grow. Updating the objective design standards is a HUGE opportunity to encourage the growth of the new downtown that young professionals love. Use updating these standards to encourage the building of new affordable apartments within walking distance of the necessities. We grew up here, we'd like to be able to afford to live near our friends and families; and start families of our own here. Thank you for your time, Julien ATTENTION: This email originated from outside the City's network. Use caution when opening links and attachments.
